This site supports an article that I am writing on upgrading NetBSD/i386 from version 1.0 to present using just the source code. Also you will find a Qemu VM of every major version of NetBSD since 1.0 here.
Additionally I have prepared the installation media for NetBSD 1.0 and this can be installed on Virtualbox.
